Tools of Interest

Ξ March 7th, 2008 | → 2 Comments | ∇ Pursuit |

I am currently employing 3 tools that may be of interest.

One is TaskFreak  which is a ph/mysql app that helps a person or multiple persons get and track tasks and their progress and due dates.  It has been great for our photography business since there is often so much to do and hard to keep track of what needs to be done when.

the other tool is something I have used for quite some time, but just pulled out of the closet again to start thinking about The Tree House.  FreeMind is a mind mapping tool that is also free and available on sourceforge.  It helps you visually (I’m a visual person) lay out ideas and thoughts and arrange them graphically.  Then you can turn your map into an outline or text doc and start filling it in.

One more tool, Ywriter, is also helping me organize my docs.  It is a new tool, so a little confusing, but it helps you keep track of all sorts of things for writing books and organizing your story.  See Sean’s post on SeanDareOnline concerning Ywriter.

I’ll let you know how these tools work within the writing environment.

Update - progress on The Tree House

Funny how things work out and how complicated they can become. I put together a little teaser essay to try my hand at fiction, and kapow! people don’t want to be left hanging. Well as Sean Dare points out in his writing is hard post, you can get into trouble real quick if you haven’t planned it out. I simply sat there in the car on the way back from Michigan and started thinking about what kind of story and what kind of tone and feel I would want to read and I started writing that. And it turned out ok and it got people to want to know more about Terna and his world. Well, to continue past there, we have to address some issues and some logistics… (more…)

a new path

I’m really wondering what to do. I have had some interesting responses to my essay entry. I’m kind of torn, since I’m not really a fiction writer. At least I don’t consider myself one. Yet I had fun with my short essay assignment. I again put the blame on Sean Dare. But now, I’m trying to figure out how and where to go with my story. It unfolds in my mind, but I also want to follow some sort of storytelling rules. I don’t know any. Other than don’t mess up. Which has been a crippling motto of mine. It has been an issue for me that causes paralysis on all sorts of planes. I often don’t do things or launch out because I might fail and for some reason, I’ve determined that failure is not an option. dumb I know. Well, not dumb if you still try and try til you succeed. But dumb if you don’t do anything because you might fail. (more…)

Essay - The Tree House - 01

Ξ March 3rd, 2008 | → 4 Comments | ∇ Essay |

Something rustled in the bushes below. Terna’s pulse quickened. From his vantage point in the tree house and by the moonlight, he could look down on the bushes and see movement, about 20 yards to the west of the tree house, on the ground. Although he could see the movement, his sight could not pierce the foilage to see what exactly was moving through it. Then, as abruptly as the movement began, it ceased, leaving silence and a slight breeze in the trees as the only occupiers of the night air. Terna relaxed again and rested his head on his travel pack. (more…)

a trip, a wedding, new blog additions

Ξ March 3rd, 2008 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Pursuit |

sorry about the lack of writing… again. hope this doesn’t become a habit. life gets busy and blogging is the first to go.

Anyway, this past week I went to be a part of my brother’s wedding. Of course, this required a little road trip. We traveled to Lansing, Michigan over the weekend. Actually Thursday to Sunday, so it was a bit longer weekend than usual. The trip takes about 8.5-9.5 hours. That equals about 4 movies in kid terms. Since we have 3 children and only one reads, movies was the name of the game. We made the trip Thursday morning waking at 4am and on the road by 4:45CST. We arrived precisely at 2:15 EST. (more…)
