a trip, a wedding, new blog additions

sorry about the lack of writing… again. hope this doesn’t become a habit. life gets busy and blogging is the first to go.

Anyway, this past week I went to be a part of my brother’s wedding. Of course, this required a little road trip. We traveled to Lansing, Michigan over the weekend. Actually Thursday to Sunday, so it was a bit longer weekend than usual. The trip takes about 8.5-9.5 hours. That equals about 4 movies in kid terms. Since we have 3 children and only one reads, movies was the name of the game. We made the trip Thursday morning waking at 4am and on the road by 4:45CST. We arrived precisely at 2:15 EST.

In the wedding, I was the best man, my first time being a best man and also likely my last time being a best man since all of my current friends are married. Since it was my first, and only time, I had thought that I would prepare some lengthy, weighty, wordy, beautiful speech. I started several times to write something out. It never felt right. Too scripted. So I went against my own nature and decided to wing it. I think it went ok and nobody punched me, so I figure that as a success and a blessing to the bride and groom. Will has reasons enough to jab me at any time any way.

I am very happy for my brother, he has been given a great gift in his new bride and I am excited to see where this new journey in life takes them. It is an adventure like none other, starting out, just married, figuring out your place in life and with another person. Lots of challenges, lots of good times, lots to look forward to and lots to learn along the way.

Because of my friend Sean Dare, I am attempting something new. I’m taking a stab at fiction writing, but I’m not sure how it is going to go. To make things simple, I will copy his approach and put my fiction writing attempts under the Essay category. I’ll also label them as such in the title. Please let me know what you think and if Sean helps me, maybe I can put a voting mechanism on here somewhere that will help me understand which ones I should continue and which ones I should let die. This will also help me figure out if I can cut it in this area of writing and as Sean alluded to in his blog articles, how I might find my voice. I will post my first draft essay tonight. YIKES!

I didn’t know I was such a positive influence on you! Of course, you are writing fiction, so maybe I am a poor influence on you? ;-) Just kidding. I can’t wait to read your first essay!
